Psychologist Ajeng Raviando, M.Psi, said that marriage in the real world is not as simple and as happy as in fairy tales. According to him, a marriage must have a strong foundation for marriage is always harmonious. For that Ajeng provide some tips for marriage to run harmoniously, among them,
1. Effective communication
2. Mutual mutual trust to maintain the sustainability of husband and wife relationships
3. Mutual respect, tolerance, and compromise
4. Commitment to jointly build and maintain marriage, in difficult and happy
5. Principle of affection
Apart from the 5 tips to maintain the marriage harmony above, it keeps the marriage not only good for the soul, but also the body.
The study of more than 600 men in the UK reveals that those who managed to maintain a marital sustainability have healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels than those whose marriages fall apart.
In the study, participants were asked to assess the quality of marriage at two milestones in the household: when their child was 3 years old, and when their child was 9. The assessment options were “consistently good”, “consistently bad”, “the better “, or” getting worse “.
Then, for the next 12 years, the research team measured the health condition of the participants. They analyze blood pressure, resting heart rate, weight, cholesterol, and blood sugar – risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
The results, as reported in the Journal of Epidemiology & Community Health, men who rated “better” at their marriage had better cholesterol levels and healthier weight a few years later.
In contrast, marriage described as “getting worse” is associated with diastolic blood pressure that also worsens. The scientists also concluded that changes in the quality of marriage seem to be able to predict the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Nevertheless, the researchers caution that the conclusions of this study still need to be explored further. The men who are study participants are also relatively young, so it is still a bit early to know whether the risk will develop into a real disease.
To be sure, the team suggested that couples whose relationships are worsening undergo marriage counseling, as this seems to have the potential to improve psychological well-being as well as physical health.
Previous studies have shown that compared to bachelors, married men on average have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease.
